Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)

      Introduction

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is a promising new class  of diagnostic medical imaging

technology that utilizes advanced photonics and fiber optics to obtain images and

tissue characterization  on a scale never before possible within the human body.

With micrometer resolution and millimeter penetration depth. OCT has critical

advantages over other medical imaging systems, such as ultrasound, MRI that are

not suited to morphological tissue imaging. OCT can be used in biological systems

to study tissues in vivo with near-histologic, ultrahigh resolution, such as retina in the eye. The rationale for

intravascular application of OCT is its potential for in vivo visualisation of the coronary artery microstructure.
