i-stat technology by Abbott Company

The i-stat uses disposable cartridges that allow for testing of Blood Gases, Electrolytes, Chemistries, Coagulation, Hematology, and Cardiac Markers and more. Has a liquid crystal display, 17 key touchpad and an infrared transmitter and receiver for interfacing. Factory calibration is performed on device. Uses different cartridges for monitoring different parameters. Most cartridges can monitor multiple parameters at a time.

Detection: microfabricated thin film electrodes for amperometric, potentiometric or conductometric circuits made sensitive to particular constituents by specific polymer membranes or immobilization techniques.

Fluid handling: Blister pouch methods, i.e. mechanical puncture of pouches and squeezing out fluids or air.

Input: ~17-95 uL (about 2 drops) of whole blood (some cartridges require EDTA, or Heparin, into the cartridge, insert into the handheld device and press start. Cartridges must be stored

Power input: two 9-volt lithium ion batteries.

Test results in as little as two minutes as many as 30 minutes.

Weighs 1 pound and is 8 in. by 2 in. by 2 in.

Store cartridges at 2-8 C

Piccolo express technology by Abaxis Company

Uses centrifugal and capillary forces for valving and pumping. Completes most tests in 12 minutes. Self calibrates during each test. Uses dry stored reagents, and has disposable plastic discs. Has a color VGA screen and 10-digit keypad to interface with user and the disposable discs. Uses nine wavelengths to determine absorbance spectrum of tests and has an onboard analyzer to output the data.

Size and function: 11-pound shoebox sized blood analyzer for chemical analysis of blood including Waived lipid and liver panels, and glucose monitoring

Input solution: 0.1cc of Lithium-heparin whole blood, lithium-heparin plasma, or serum. Cannot use EDTA as an anti-coagulant.

Power requirements: 100-240 volts AC, 50-60 Hz or 15 volts DC, 5.0A.

Discs have a storage life of 6-18 months and must be stored at 2-8 C

Detection: Xenon arc stroboscopic lamp with beamsplitter/detector to read nine wavelengths with heater to heat disc to 37 C for desired reaction temperature of reagents on disc.
