Tissue Engineered Skin: Apligraf®

Apligraf® Results and Assessment.

The result is an easy to apply autologous (patient derived) skin graft. Apligraf® was initially approved for use in ulcers; however, it also gained approval for use in burn victims. There are advantages and disadvantages to the use of Apligraf® . Functionally, the engineered skin is the same as natural skin aside from sweat glands and hair follicles and there is no fear of rejection because the cells used in developing the skin are from the patient. As one would expect there has never been any evidence of host antibody or cell mediated response to Apligraf®. The engineered skin also integrates at the site and cosmetically can match the patients own skin tone and texture. However, the 3 weeks required for the skin's development plus shipment time inhibits the use of Apligraf®  in an emergency, trauma cases. If a patient has had massive areas of burned and needs skin immediately, Apligraf® is still not a good solution; therefore, traditional grafts and dressings must be used in those cases.
