Text Box: Future Directions for MDT
The field of magnetic drug targeting is still relatively new yet has already shown promising potential in cancer and cardiovascular applications. However, more research must be performed to better understand the dynamics behind this procedure. Additionally, further development must be provided to match the degradation time of the functionalized particles with the time necessary to reach the targeted site in vivo.
Finally, current methods of MDT are limited by the depth of the tumor or cardiac defect with respect to the surface of the skin.  This is because strength of the magnetic field must overcome the forces imposed on the particle by the natural blood flow at that location.  If targeted areas are in locations where the shear stress overpowers the force imposed by the magnet, the particles will be unable to remain at the site long enough to allow for the desorption of the drugs.
Overall this method of drug delivery shows promising potential in treating many diseases with localized tissue damage or abnormalities.  Future research in the field of MDT will serve to improve current capabilities of this treatment method.
