A Stroke is a "brain attack," a sudden interruption of blood flow to the brain that causes brain damage and loss of function. [9]

There are Two types of strokes:
Ischemic due to blockages in arteries to the brain which make up 80% of stroke cases and
Hemmorhagic when an artery in the brain bursts

Sites in the Brain where Stroke Can Affect Function

Common induced motor impairments following a stroke are :

weakness (hemiparesis)
incoordination (abnormal synergies, decreased smoothness)
spasticity (hyperactive stretch reflexes)
increased passive stiffness (contracture)
proprioceptive impairments

The need for rehabilitators arises essentially due to reduced functional workspace resulting from these motor impairments.  Without rehabilitation the condition worsens.
