To avoid the need to rotating the flexible shaft and its contained wires, the technique of piezoelectric transducer array had been developed.  Arrayed piezoelectric transducers are putted cylindrically on the tip of the catheter.  Microelectronic circuit is embedded in the tip to reduce the need of a bunch of wires in flexible shaft.  The typical amount of piezoelectric transducer element is 32 or 64 to get a high resolution acoustic beam.

       

        The mechanism of the arrayed piezoelectric transducers is shown below.  At each flam only a few of piezoelectric transducer is activated.  Phase modulated electrical signals are send to each transducer, and a focused acoustic beam is generated, which becomes as a signal piezoelectric transducer like the one used in mechanical system.  By moving the chosen transducer group to adjacent transducers with electrical control signal, a cross-sectional scan can be generated.
